Targeting by Tags & Custom Fields
To target visitors to your website using the tags or custom fields that you have created in your Email Marketing Platform, sometimes referred to as Email Service Provider (ESP), follow the below steps.
Step 1 - Connect Convertful to your Email Marketing Platform. You can find a list of Email Marketing Services that can be integrated with Convertful and how to set up each integration here. Note that targeting by tags or custom fields, works with the following Email Marketing Services :
- Active Campaign
- MailChimp
- Keap (former Infusionsoft)
- HubSpot
- Drift
- Gist (former ConvertFox)
- ConvertKit
- Drip
- Klaviyo
- Aweber
- GetResponse
- Platformly
Step 2 - Create your widget. You can find our guides to widget creation here.
Step 3 - In your widget’s “Display Rules” tab, click on the “Show Only If” section. Here you will find a list of targeting options based on the contact’s data in your integration list.
For example, if the contact has a certain tag, is part of a certain contact list, is at a certain stage in the sale cycle, has a certain custom field data and so on.
How It Works #
Every time a visitor subscribes to your widget, he/she will now trigger an automatic synchronization that will display visitor’s data from your Email Marketing Platform contact’s list in your Convertful list of subscribers:
You can then use this data in the “Display Rules” tab to show specific offers for subscribers with the certain tags or custom fields in your list.
Identifying the Visitor #
The visitor could be identified when subscribing to one of your widgets, or if he/she visits your site’s page with the URL get parameter:
?conv_email={email}
For example:
https://mysite.com/[email protected]
Both identifying methods will trigger the synchronization allowing you to display widgets targeted by the Email Marketing Platform’s list data. Simply add the parameter to the links from your future email campaigns, and your subscribers will be identified and will see the properly targeted offers and messages.
Custom Fields Name Text Format #
Note that certain Email Marketing Services (like ActiveCampaign, MailChimp, and others) require data to be sent in a certain format, uppercase for example. We manage these requirements automatically when you send the data, but when synchronization triggers – data comes back in a format it is stored inside the Email Marketing Platform contact list.
Thus, if you use your button to add a custom field to your MailChimp list, like this:
The value returns with the field name in upper case:
For the targeting to work properly, in your widget’s “Display Rules” tab, you need to use the data in a format you see in subscribers list after synchronization:
