Why are my subscribers not coming in Mailchimp?

Issue: Mailchimp integration is active and the subscribers' emails are appearing in Convertful but are not coming through to Mailchimp. This could be due to one of the following factors:

  1. You have not added a button to your widget or you have not added an "On Submit Action" to the button.
  2. The provided parameters for your MailChimp account are not valid.
  3. You have enabled double opt-in in your Mailchimp account or in your Convertful widget.
  4. You are testing with an email that is not accepted by MailChimp, for example an email with the domain test.com.

For more detail, see below.

Possibility 1:

Check and make sure that for the button on your Convertful widget, you have selected an action to occur on submission of the data by the visitor. Note you can choose more than one action and there are various actions available:

  • Add subscriber with default settings
  • Add subscriber to a list
  • Add subscriber to a group
  • Remove subscriber from a group
  • Add tag to subscriber
  • Remove tag from subscriber
  • Update custom field
  • Add note to subscriber

Possibility 2:

If you received notification that the provided parameters for your MailChimp account are not valid and to update your parameters. Check and ensure that the fields/parameters that are marked as required by Mailchimp match the fields/parameters on your Convertful widget. You can find these fields/parameters in your MailChimp account by going to  Audience --> Settings --> Audience fields and Merge tags:

For example, if you have ticked the required box for the “Last Name” field in Mailchimp, then you must ensure that in your Convertful widget, you also have a “Last Name" field as well, otherwise the data will not sync to your MailChimp account as a required field is missing. Alternatively you can unticked any non required field in Mailchimp.

Possibility 3:

You have enabled double opt-in in your Mailchimp account or in your Convertful widget. You can check this in Mailchimp under Audience --> Settings --> Audience names and defaults:

If double opt-in is enabled, then a subscriber will only reach your list if he/she confirms the subscription via email generated from Mailchimp. Once they confirm, the subscriber will then be added to MailChimp.

Note this would likely be the case if only some of your subscribers are coming through to Mailchimp and some are not.

Possibility 4:

Note that MailChimp has strict rules for the emails that were previously in the list and were removed from it. For example, if for testing purposes you remove your own email to subscribe with it again, it might be marked as "unsubscribed", which basically means "permanently banned".

Also note that email ending with "test.com" will not work

For testing purposes, we suggest using the Gmail alias feature. For example, if you got the email "[email protected]", emails like "[email protected]" or "[email protected]" will be counted as brand new emails, but still will send all campaigns/confirmations to the initial "[email protected]".
